Okay, here is the skinny on character generation. Use a straight down the line 4d6 and toss the low dice method for determining stats. Max hit points at first level and then roll for each successive level tossing out anything less than half of the hit die (i.e. a minimum of 4HP for d8, or 5HP for d10). Given players propensity for wanting high stats lets say I am going to trust your judgement; if the stats don’t work they don’t work, go ahead and re-roll all the stats. If it takes a few time it takes a few times but no more than necessary please. For building your characters use the Players Handbook and only the Players Handbook, everything in it is fair game. Outfit your character with any and all non-magical equipment you want, show up with a list of DMG approved magical items you would like for me to selectively approve (dream big but…). The party will additionally be receiving a sum of gold to spend as they see fit in addition to these items. Level your characters to fifth. Currently Michael Thompson is working on a Magic User or Illusionist, pick your characters appropriately and think about bringing along a second should the foreseeable happen (insert evil DM laugh here, and yes we will have copyright approved DM instead of the generic GM!!).
